The network's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about watching this lovable family go about their everyday routines.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to evolve comedy past its prevailing cynical streak. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

Future Seasons

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
