The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, most notably the pastel suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
Price's death comes shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as various looks for her American tour after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
