Larian Studios Details Its Implementation of Generative AI for Upcoming Divinity
The studio behind acclaimed role-playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just shown its upcoming project, sparking a wave of excitement within the player base. However, subsequent remarks from the company's figurehead have brought nuance to the discussion, focusing on the studio's stance toward generative artificial intelligence.
AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute
In a new clarification, Larian's director outlined that the company is employing generative AI for particular supporting purposes. These encompass developing pitch decks, generating initial artistic references, and drafting placeholder copy.
Notably, Vincke stressed that the final content in the game will be authored exclusively by real writers. "Larian is creating all the content ourselves," he affirmed.
We are constantly increasing our roster of writers and are actively forming writing teams.
Since visual development is being explicitly mentioned — we right now have twenty-three concept artists and have positions available for additional talent.
Everything we do is incremental and focused on enabling creatives to spend additional energy on making content.
Every AI system used well is a boost to a artist's routine, not a substitute for their craft.
Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent
The revelation of using AI at first generated concern among a segment of the player base. In reply, Vincke provided additional clarification on online platforms.
"At Larian, we employ these tools to explore references, just like we use search engines and reference books," he wrote. "In the very early planning process we use it as a simple sketch for layout which we then substitute with original concept art."
He continued, "Our studio recruits talent for their creative vision, not for their ability to execute what a machine suggests."
Key Areas of AI Integration
Vincke had previously broken down the studio's focused strategy to this technology, defining its use into three main pillars:
- Streamlining Repetitive Work: This includes polishing mocap data, dialogue cleanup, and technical processes like retargeting animations.
- Rapid Prototyping ('White Boxing'): Using technology to speedily create simple models of scenarios to validate concepts prior to full implementation.
- Long-Term Aspirations: Investigating how AI could in the future create new forms of player agency, specifically in managing dynamic reactions in a vast role-playing world.
He explicitly affirmed that core creative disciplines — such as music composition — are are absolutely not departments where the studio is cutting artistic involvement. In fact, Larian is actively hiring in these very positions.
"Larian is not launching a game with AI-generated content, nor looking at cutting teams to substitute them with artificial intelligence," Vincke summarized.
