Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Alleges Parent Company Blocked Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
One of the original creators behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has stated how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction of a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, that established the company with Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he plans to independently develop this new product within an individual collection highlighting causes Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Conflict Between Creators versus Parent Company
The recent announcement intensifies the continuing conflict between the internationally recognized ice cream maker and Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods corporation which acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
Both founders have asserted that the parent company and their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming a Symbol for Solidarity
Mr. Cohen announced through an Instagram video that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting consumer ideas for naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”
The watermelon has emerged as an emblem of support for the Palestinian people because of its coloration, which mirror the colors in Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement plus Recent Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, leading to Unilever selling their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales in the occupied West Bank.
The new dessert series is being created through Ben's Best, the activist dessert company that was first created several years back to support former political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Management Shifts plus Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen indicated how he will develop other frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly due to Unilever.
This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at the company recently, after many years with the organization, citing worries regarding how the company's autonomy had been undermined after Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
Previously, Ben Cohen stated how "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can achieve its ethical purpose, the values which it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
