A Story of Surprising Generosity: When a Student Let Me Stay on Her Dorm Floor

During the year 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I assumed to arrange accommodation when I arrived, however once I got there, a big convention was happening and all the backpackers hostels and budget accommodation were fully booked.

Hailing from Singapore, I thought the possibility of just sleep at the airport – but quickly found the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, is not open 24 hours. With no idea quite what to do and getting a bit desperate, I hopped on public transport and began walking near a gaming venue, believing I might spend the night somewhere that stayed open 24/7. This was not ideal in the ideal condition for nailing an interview the next morning, however, being a cash-strapped student, I couldn’t afford.

We could all use more folks with such compassion.

I must have looked lost because a woman saw me wandering around the city center and inquired if everything was alright. I recounted the story of my accommodation crisis and without hesitation she said I could crash on a spare mattress in her student dorm at the Australian National University – an ideal turn of events, considering that was where my interview was the following day. Generously, she also provided a meal: a leftover filled rolls she had from her part-time job. I was able to use warm shower facilities and somewhere safe to rest to spend the night.

With hindsight, it’s clear to me the significant risk she accepted as a young woman allowing a man she’d just met crash at her place. Back then I existed within my male privilege bubble and was oblivious to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she offered that help – yet deeply appreciative.

Ultimately, I did not go to that university, and I didn’t meet that kind stranger again, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of generosity. I hope the universe has returned her good deed tenfold. Our society requires more people who show such kindness.
